Walking to Wellness Group Lead

Task Description

The Kidney Foundation is looking to improve the health and wellness of our community members living with kidney disease and to prevent kidney disease for the rest of us by encouraging us all to get out and walk. To get us out and walking they are preparing to launch Walking to Wellness Community Meet Ups in communities across BC and the Yukon. We will be starting a Walking to Wellness group in Whitehorse in January 2025.

To get these Community Meet Ups going, The Kidney Foundation is looking for enthusiastic individuals who would love an opportunity to improve the health and wellness of their community while building their coaching and leadership skills.

Who you are:
You are an active person who loves getting out for a run or a walk and would love to share that joy with others. You are empathetic person and sharing your time and talents to help others reach their wellness goals would make your day better.

Minimum Age

19

Skills Needed

Like working with others
Can be supportive and encouraging
Want to help people to achieve their walking goals
Empathy – many walking participants may have physical/health issues and/or other barriers that will make starting and maintaining a walking program hard.
Can comfortably walk 5km

Nice to haves:
Emergency First Aid with CPR Level C or equivalent
Coaching experience
Ability to communicate in another language other than English including but not limited to: French, Punjabi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Korean, and Farsi

Responsabilities

Volunteers will be assigned a walking group that they will need to lead through a prescribed walking program on a weekly basis. Volunteers will present physical activity and wellness content, provide demonstrations on how to do certain activities correctly, as well as encouragement walking participants to meet their personal goals.

Preparing for each weekly session
Greeting everyone when they arrive
Presenting the topic of the week related to health/wellness
Planning the day’s walk route (if needed – most walking locations will be at a set walking track)
Lead Warm up and cool down activities
Lead / support your pace group – encouraging everyone and keeping the group together
Help participants track their progress

Time Commitment

Volunteer Training late December and Early January
Walking to Wellness Volunteer Position starts Mid to Late January
Runs weekly 2hrs/wk until the last week of May
Completion Celebration First Sunday in June
