Join the Whistle Bend Place Volunteer Team! Supporting long-term care residents on staff-led outings to special events in and around Whitehorse is a great way to spend an afternoon and have a positive impact in your community.
* This opportunity is for people who are currently living in Yukon and are fluent English speakers. Requires an RCMP criminal record/vulnerable sector check and 2 references who have known you for at least 1 year.
Ability to communicate clearly in English
Willingness to accept supervision & direction from staff
Physically able to push a person in a wheelchair over varied surfaces
A genuine interest in connecting with seniors and elders
Friendliness, good listening skills, respectfulness, compassion, patience, acceptance of people with declining physical and cognitive abilities
Reliability and punctuality
Report to Therapies staff on arrival for specific instructions
Help residents get ready for the outing
Accompany residents to & from boarding area
Socialize with residents on facility bus
Assist as required at destination. May involve walking alongside a resident, pushing a resident in a wheelchair, helping them order at a restaurant, assisting with shopping, conversing about attractions (exhibits, scenery, history, performance, animals)
2 – 3 x per month; 2-4 hours per outing. Weekdays, occasional evening or weekend opportunities. Outings may be longer in summer.
Full orientation and training provided, as well as opportunities for in-service training on related topics
Visits to local attractions & events at no cost to volunteer (e.g. Wildlife Preserve, Arts Centre, festivals & cultural events, museums, farms, sled dog kennels, scenic drives)
Volunteer appreciation program, including social events and workshops
Opportunity to share connection with older people in your community
Opportunity to be part of a caring and dynamic community of Continuing Care volunteers and staff
