Volunteer Opportunities

Treasurer – Downtown Urban Gardeners’ Society (DUGS) Board of Directors

LOCATION

Whitehorse, Yukon

Task Description

The Downtown Urban Gardeners’ Society (DUGS) is seeking a Treasurer for the volunteer Board of Directors. The Board of Directors are volunteers that manage the daily administrative functions of the gardens, and the Board Treasurer is responsible for fiscal oversight for the organization. A Treasurer is required to manage financial record keeping and update the Board on transactions and budget compliance, as well as direct payments for expenses and track revenue obtained.

Minimum Age

18

Skills Needed

While a knowledge of gardening is not required, an interest in gardening and maintaining a community growing space is necessary. Familiarity with tracking revenue and expenses, record keeping, and organization skills would be considered a benefit. Financial management experience and legal ability to handle monetary transactions are necessary.

Responsibilities

The Board Treasurer oversees the financial management of the organization, and tracks expenses and revenue throughout the year. Financial reports are required for monthly Board meetings, and an annual financial report is required for the AGM in November. The Treasurer is also responsible for coordinating the membership fee payments at the beginning of each gardening season, and for maintaining records as payments come in. The Treasurer develops the annual budget for review by the Board. The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring contractors are paid, and for coordinating bank activities and annual account updates.

Time Commitment

Approximately 3-4 hours per month during the garden season, and 1-2 hours per month in the off season. The gardening season runs from May to September, with a pre-season preparation period beginning in March. Some additional hours may be required during the garden membership intake in April.

Incentive for the Volunteer

In addition to the sense of fulfillment from helping address food insecurity in our city, Board activities are counted towards the volunteer hour requirement each gardening season. This is a great opportunity for someone looking for an introduction to being on a Board of Directors and taking on specific roles in a volunteer organization.
