As a Board Member at the Yukon Invasive Species Council (YISC), you will play a vital role in shaping the future of Yukon’s environmental stewardship by helping guide our strategic direction, governance, and community impact. This is a fantastic opportunity for new and experienced board members alike, as we provide comprehensive orientation, ongoing training, and supportive mentorship to help you confidently contribute from day one.
Your key tasks will include attending regular board meetings, contributing to policy and planning discussions, helping oversee organizational priorities and finances, and supporting fundraising and outreach efforts. As a valued member, you will have a meaningful voice in decisions that influence the protection of Yukon’s ecosystems from invasive species while gaining valuable leadership experience and connecting with a passionate community of environmental advocates.
No prior board experience or specialized skills are required to join the Yukon Invasive Species Council’s board — we welcome anyone with a genuine interest in Yukon’s environment and a willingness to learn and actively participate. We provide thorough orientation and ongoing support to help all members develop confidence and effectiveness in their role.
While we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds, we are especially interested in individuals with accounting or financial experience to help strengthen our governance and oversight. Above all, successful board members bring enthusiasm, commitment, and a collaborative spirit as we work together to protect Yukon’s ecosystems from invasive species.
As a board member of the Yukon Invasive Species Council, you play a key role in shaping the organization’s mission and programs. Board meetings are very important and members are expected to attend regularly; these meetings can be attended either in person or remotely to accommodate different needs. Active participation ensures effective governance and informed decision-making.
In addition to meetings, board members are encouraged to participate in some—but not all—weed pulls and Fireweed Market events. These activities help support community outreach and invasive species management efforts, strengthening YISC’s connection with the public and advancing our environmental goals.
Board members are expected to commit approximately 5 hours per month as a minimum, which generally includes attending monthly board meetings (usually lasting 1.5 to 2 hours), reviewing meeting materials, and participating in some community events like weed pulls or Fireweed Market days.
That said, we welcome and encourage members who are eager to contribute more time and energy to take on additional responsibilities such as serving on committees, helping with fundraising initiatives, or supporting special projects. Your level of involvement can be flexible and tailored to fit your interests and availability.
Volunteering as a board member with the Yukon Invasive Species Council offers a unique opportunity to make a real impact on protecting Yukon’s ecosystems from invasive species.
