Thomson Centre is seeking volunteers for our Pet Visit program! Do you have a dog that is calm, friendly, and enjoys connecting with new people? If so, we would love to hear from you. Our Pet Visit program ensures that residents in Continuing Care facilities have an opportunity to spend time connecting with animals (specifically dogs), as we know that spending time with animals can help promote relaxation, pain management, mental wellness, and reminiscence.
As registered volunteers, you and your dog would regularly spend time at Thomson Centre interacting with residents individually or in a group setting. You would be responsible for ensuring your dog is well groomed and interacts with residents in a safe and calm manner, and you would help engage residents in conversation. All dogs are required to be on a flat leash with a flat collar to prevent injuries, as well as be up-to-date with vaccinations.
Dogs must have basic manners and be responsive to their owner. Preference would be given to dogs that have done formal training (i.e. Canine Good Neighbour).
The handler would benefit from having experience interacting with older adults and individuals with disabilities, good active listening skills, and an ability to follow program guidelines.
Vulnerable Sector screening, TB screening and references required.
We are seeking candidates who have 1-2 hrs to offer weekly or bi-weekly. Ideally long term.
All registered volunteers receive regular support, mentorship and training. Volunteer Appreciation events are held throughout the year. References are available for volunteers who have committed to their for at least 6 months.
