Continuing Care is seeking mature, compassionate and dedicated volunteers to support residents living with mental health challenges in our Continuing Care homes. The ideal applicant would have experience and/or training in supporting individuals living with a variety of mental health challenges. Mental Health First Aid and/or ASIST training, or completion of Social Work/Psychology/Social Services training would be considered an asset.
Position Overview:
Volunteers play an essential role in enhancing residents’ quality of life by providing companionship, emotional support, and assistance with recreational activities both within the facility and in the community. This role helps promote connection, dignity, and a sense of belonging for those in living in care facilities.
Skills Needed:
– Experience and/or training in mental health support, social services, or a related field
– Strong interpersonal and communication skills
– Compassionate, patient, and dependable
– Comfortable engaging with residents in both structured and informal settings
Responsibilities:
– Provide social interaction and companionship to residents
– Assist with on-site programs such as arts, music, and leisure activities
– Accompany residents on supervised outings, such as community walks, coffee outings, local events, or recreational trips
– Support staff in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment
– Maintain confidentiality, respect, and professional boundaries at all times
2-3 hrs/week or bi-weekly
– Participate in meaningful resident activities and community outings, and make a positive impact on the lives of community members
– Access ongoing training and staff support
– Volunteer appreciation and recognition
